Jeewan Suwal is a Nepal-born visual artist based in Hobart, Tasmania. Working primarily through painting and installation, his practice explores memory, movement, and the emotional experience of place.
He completed his Master of Applied Design and Arts from Curtin University, Western Australia, alongside both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts from Banaras Hindu University, India. His academic journey was supported by the ICCR Scholarship from the Government of India.
Suwal’s work is deeply connected to psychogeography, using painting as a way to trace emotional, psychological, and geographical relationships with place. His compositions often emerge through memory, wandering, and observation, combining fragments of different locations into layered abstract forms.

Through this process, his paintings move beyond direct representation. They reflect shifting atmospheres, personal reflection, and the subtle ways environments shape emotional experience. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, his visual language balances movement, texture, and spatial sensitivity.
Alongside painting, Suwal has also developed installation-based projects. His work Listen to the Earth, created in response to the 2015 Nepal earthquakes, has been presented internationally, including at MONA FOMA in Tasmania and Moesgaard Museum in Denmark.
Since relocating to Tasmania in 2020, he has continued to exhibit across Australia and internationally. His practice reflects an ongoing engagement with displacement, belonging, and the evolving relationship between memory and landscape.

Artist Statement: Jeewan Suwal’s work explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of place through the lens of psychogeography. Drawing from memory, movement, and lived experience, his paintings combine fragments of different environments into abstract compositions that reflect both personal and collective relationships with landscape. His practice considers how drifting through places, observing details, and carrying memories shape our understanding of belonging and space.
