Bhairaj Maharjan | Contemporary Artists

10 Apr 2026 0 comments
Bhairaj Maharjan is a painter from Patan whose work is shaped by memory, place, and the changing life of the city around him. Born in 1971, he grew up within the older fabric of Patan, and that sense of environment continues to inform the mood and direction of his paintings.
He studied Fine Arts at Lalitkala Campus and chose early on to pursue painting as a full-time path. As the first in his family to follow life as an artist, his journey developed through persistence and personal conviction rather than certainty or structure.
His work moves across figurative painting, portraiture, cityscapes, and landscapes, with occasional returns to Buddhist themes. There is variety in subject matter, but a steady sense of observation runs through it all. His paintings remain connected to the visible world and to lived experience.
Bhairaj often speaks of painting as something that must come from within. That instinctive quality is present in his work, where scenes feel felt rather than staged. He works mainly in acrylic, while also exploring oil, and has built a substantial body of work over a long and committed career.
His personal story is also tied closely to resilience. After the family home in Patan was destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes, it was gradually rebuilt and now serves as both studio and gallery. It has become an important space for his practice and for the many works he has created over the years.
Today, his paintings continue to be seen through exhibitions, galleries, and private networks, including recent presentations of his Buddha series. Bhairaj Maharjan remains part of a generation of artists who helped sustain and shape Nepal’s contemporary art scene through changing times.
